The Dino 206 SP is a sports prototype produced by Ferrari in 1965 under the Dino marque. Ferrari intended to produce at least fifty examples for homologation by the CSI in the Sport 2.0 L Group 4 category. As only 18 were made (1 SP + 17 S), the car had to compete in the Prototype 2.0-litre class instead. In spite of this handicap the Dino 206 S took many class wins.
The 1965 Dino 166 P was the first sports prototype model for the Dino marque and previewed the new rear-engined chassis and revised bodywork. The other, 206 SP, was a starting point for the final 65° DOHC race engine evolution.
FERRARI DINO 206 SP
This model could best be described as an open-top version of the Dino 166 P with a bigger engine. This one-off barchetta was specifically designed for hillclimbs in the European Mountain Championship. In fact, its power and light weight gave Ludovico Scarfiotti four wins and allowed him to take the title. The 206 S presented a year later was derived directly from the Dino 206 SP.
Mr. Jim Carpenter, a well-regarded Ferrari specialist based in Arizona, commissioned a new '206' body to be built by Giordenengo in Italy, correctly made all-aluminium hand-crafted body as per the original 206. He utilised an original 1972 Dino 246 GT chassis to replicate the original factory 206.
The overall dimensions of the car and specs were built to exactly replicate the original factory Dino 206 SP of which only 18 were ever built by Ferrari (including the S version).
This project offers the chance to enjoy the same experience as of 206 ownership but at a fraction of the cost. With the factory cars currently commanding prices in excess of 5 million EUR it could be regarded as a real bargain! And with in period built chassis and body! Only this represents superb value.
