Introduction:

The 1980 Ferrari 400i represents a significant chapter in the storied history of one of the world's most iconic luxury sports car manufacturers. Built during an era of evolving design philosophies and technological advancements, the 400i showcased Ferrari's ability to balance power, performance, and sophistication. With its sleek lines, powerful V12 engine, and luxurious interior, this grand tourer embodies the timeless elegance that has come to define Ferrari's enduring legacy.

Design and Exterior:

The design of the 400i exudes a classic elegance that effortlessly captures attention. The exterior, penned by legendary Italian design firm Pininfarina, combines smooth curves with bold lines to create a harmonious and aerodynamic silhouette. The elongated hood, flared wheel arches, and low-slung profile contribute to the car's dynamic presence on the road. Despite its grand touring nature, the 400i retains the unmistakable Ferrari DNA, with the iconic prancing horse emblem prominently displayed on the front grille.

Performance and Power:

At the heart of the 1980 Ferrari 400i lies a 4.8-liter V12 engine that delivers exhilarating performance. Producing around 315 horsepower, the 400i possesses the ability to sprint from 0 to 100 kmh in just over 7 seconds, an impressive feat for a grand tourer of its time. Its top speed of approximately 240 kmh solidifies its status as a true performance machine. The engine is mated to a smooth-shifting three-speed automatic transmission, providing effortless acceleration and enhancing the car's touring capabilities.

Luxurious Interior:

Step inside the 400i, and you'll find a cabin that blends opulence with driver-focused functionality. The interior exudes a sense of refined luxury, featuring premium leather upholstery, plush seating, and a wealth of polished wood trim. Designed to accommodate four occupants in comfort, the 400i offers generous legroom and headspace.

Driving Experience:

The 400i's allure extends beyond its exquisite design and formidable performance. As a grand tourer, it was engineered to provide a captivating driving experience while offering exceptional comfort and usability. The car's suspension setup strikes a fine balance between sportiness and ride quality, delivering a smooth and composed journey. Equipped with power steering, air conditioning, and power windows, the 400i blends convenience with the thrill of open-road driving.

Legacy and Rarity:

The 1980 Ferrari 400i played a notable role in the history of Ferrari's grand touring lineage. As the successor to the 365 GT4 2+2, the 400i introduced modern advancements while retaining the essence of its predecessor's design philosophy. The production run of the 400i spanned from 1979 to 1985, making it a relatively rare model in Ferrari's lineup. Its exclusivity further adds to its desirability among collectors and enthusiasts.

Conclusion:

The 1980 Ferrari 400i stands as a testament to the combination of performance, luxury, and timeless design that Ferrari has become synonymous with. Its sleek and elegant appearance turns heads wherever it goes, while the powerful V12 engine provides exhilarating performance on demand. Inside, the 400i offers a luxurious cabin that envelops occupants in comfort and style.

The 400i's legacy as a grand tourer is undeniable, representing the pinnacle of automotive engineering and craftsmanship of its time. For those fortunate enough to experience it, this classic Ferrari offers a remarkable driving experience that seamlessly combines power, sophistication, and a touch of nostalgia. The 1980 Ferrari 400i remains an emblem of the era and continues to captivate enthusiasts with its allure and timeless appeal.

Interesting moments of evolution:

400 was the first Ferrari to use automatic gearbox (GM three-speed), then fuel injection came in play at 400i models from 1979 onwards, and improved 412 was introduced in 1985.

Numbers/market position:
During 1979 to 1985 total of 1306 cars were built (884 automatic, 422 with manual stick).
For many, it is an interesting Ferrari GT with potential. Rare, very stylish, with strong V12 under hood. Demand is steady, prices ranging from very high for perfect specimen to quite low for frowzy ones.

Particular vehicle:
Offered 400i Automatica in sought-after European specification (with metric gauges) came in Rosso Corsa and beige leather interior. It was imported to Europe from Japan in 2011 and from 2015 onwards found its home in Czechia. It went through a restoration process – complex renovation of bodywork means, that it is nice and completely rust-free, with new shiny paint in original shade. Original interior was only cleaned a refreshed. Original engine F101C 010 was serviced recently (in 2020) and has new fillings and spark plugs.
The car is absolutely rust-free, is in superb shape, with shiny classy colour and clean interior. It runs well with no issues need to be solved. It is ready to give lots of pleasure to new owner. Some may lack the typical carburettor style, but a reliable injection system ensures a smooth engine performance. The transmission calmly transmits power to the road with dignity, power steering does not lack precision and brakes power. Nice specimen of amazing, sleek GT, that is still unnecessarily underestimated.
