BMW’s M Division in Garching had already created several driver-focused masterpieces during the 1980s when they introduced their wonderfully enhanced E34-based sedan in 1991. This new car, dubbed the M5, featured chassis improvements over the base 5-series E34 that included different dampers, springs and thicker anti-roll bars, all fitted by hand in Garching just as they had been with the car’s E28-based predecessor. The powerplant used was the S38B36 3.5-liter DOHC I-6 that produced a turbine-smooth 310 horsepower, which was good enough for a low 6-second 0-60 sprint and 250 kmh when chasing the horizon. Cosmetic changes included a different front spoiler and bright BMW “M” badges to differentiate this 5 Series from its more mundane brethren.
M Motorsport produced 12,254 M5s from September 1988 to August 1995, with 1,678 coming to the USA and Canada.
The 5-speed manual transmission was utilized throughout production until the final model year in 1995. The E34 series M5 enjoys an especially committed following today that supports them online and in the parts aftermarket.
This example was first delivered to an employee of the BMW M Division in Garching, Germany.
The original engine was brought to Czech Republic for a rebuilt of the engine with all original BMW parts at ca. 150.000 kilometres. The complete new paint in the original Brilliant Red colour was done in 2012. The car was never used for track days or drifting.
Always garaged, but after the last MOT ended one and a halve years ago, the car was not driven anymore and is preserved under a cover. But the rust already starts to grow. You can see the current condition on the second set of pictures in the gallery. After the last technical check it was found the power steering is not working, the exhaust is leaking and the central lock is not working properly. The oil was changed and the car is ready to be driven.
But due to the current condition, the seller decided to pass the car before the winter comes and sells the car as a project car, although complete, original and ready to be driven.
No accidents are reported in the history of the car. Six more summer tyres are coming with the car. The car can be already registered as a historic vehicle as it is over 30 years old.
