The 1990 Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.5 16V is a high-performance compact luxury car produced by the German automaker Mercedes-Benz. It was the top-of-the-line model of the 190-series and was introduced in 1988 as a sportier version of the standard 190. The 190 E 2.5 16V was renowned for its excellent handling, strong performance, and luxurious interior.
Mercedes turned to the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft (DTM) motor sport series. Cars racing in this championship, however, had to be based on a roadgoing model. Mercedes therefore had to put into series production a 190 fitted with a detuned version of the Cosworth engine.
Under the hood, the 1990 Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.5 16V Automatic is powered by a 2.5-liter, inline-four engine that delivers 195 horsepower and 235 Nm of torque. This engine is mated to a four-speed automatic transmission that features an electronic control system, which allows for smooth and precise gear changes.
The 190 E 2.5 16V's engine was designed with racing in mind, featuring four valves per cylinder and a dual-overhead camshaft setup. This allows for higher revving, resulting in a top speed of 230 kmh and a 0-10 kmh time of just 7.7 seconds. The engine also has a high compression ratio of 10.5:1, which contributs to its excellent performance.
One of the most notable features of the 1990 Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.5 16V is its advanced suspension system. It features a front MacPherson strut setup with an adjustable camber, and a multi-link rear suspension with a separate spring and shock absorber arrangement. The suspension system is further enhanced with a self-leveling hydraulic suspension that ensures a smooth ride even over rough surfaces.
With the introduction of the facelifted 190 Mercedes also introduced the Limited slip (LSD) with an electronically controlled, hydraulically locking differential which activates automatically when required (ASD). The electronic control allows varied amounts of differential lock from the standard 15% right up to 100%.
The exterior of the 190 E 2.5 16V was also updated to reflect its sporty character. It features a unique body kit with a front air dam, side skirts, and a rear spoiler. The car also rides on 15-inch alloy wheels, which are wrapped in high-performance tires. Other features include fog lights, a power sunroof, and heated power mirrors.
The interior of the 1990 Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.5 16V is equally luxurious. It features leather seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and wood trim on the dashboard and door panels. Other amenities includes power windows, power locks, air conditioning, and a premium sound system.
Overall, the 1990 Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.5 16V Automatic is a well-rounded luxury car that offeres a blend of performance and comfort. Its advanced suspension system, powerful engine, and sporty exterior makes it a popular choice among car enthusiasts. Today, it remains a sought-after classic car and is considered a testament to Mercedes-Benz's commitment to engineering excellence.
